UT Tyler's Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) assists non-native English speakers to improve their academic English language and American culture skills, as well as prepare for university matriculation and success in a global environment. Students can attend classes spanning from one (1) week to an entire semester (16 weeks).
Organized into two eight-week sessions each semester, and one eight-week summer session, the program includes Listening and Speaking; Grammar and Idioms; Reading and Discussion; Writing, Editing and Research; as well as strands focusing on entry level American Classroom Culture and advanced level University Preparation, including training in IELI Levels 5-7 for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college.
The IELI offers optional seminars including test preparation seminars for the TOEFL IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet Based Test) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) designed for students who wish to become familiar with the testing formats and develop English skills and test-taking strategies, as well as general English language development workshops which aim to fine-tune students’ skills in all domains. In addition, specialty seminars such as English for Business, English for Engineering, English for Health Care Professionals, and English for Tourism and Hospitality are available.
English waivers for admission to The University of Texas at Tyler undergraduate and graduate programs are available for successful completion of the IELI Program. Details are listed below.
IELI team members also reach out to local Tyler residents and beyond through our passport acceptance facility and support international collaborations with community organizations and local K-12 schools, such as UT Tyler's Innovation Academy and the Discovery Science Place.
