Japanese Language & Linguistics

Earlham College

The Japanese Language and Linguistics Department is committed to maintaining its national reputation for excellence, providing comprehensive individual, interactive and hands-on instruction.

This program is conducted in a learner-friendly environment designed to guide you towards your maximum potential.

Earlham runs two study-abroad programs in Japan: a full year or spring semester taking classes at Waseda University in Tokyo, and a fall semester Studies in Cross-Cultural Education (SICE) program in Morioka where you will help teach English at a local school.

Our students engage in student-faculty research during month-long experiences on subjects like Japanese food culture and the understanding of the hopes of the Ainu, aboriginal people of northern Japan.

Because of relationships cultivated through a thoughtful and practical interface with Japanese culture and society, our graduates are well prepared for employment in English-teaching programs in Japan.
